Programs
of Religious Activities with YouthBoy Scout News Bulletin Third Quarter 2007 Welcome to P.R.A.Y.'s Boy Scout News Bulletin. This Bulletin is how we share information about the religious emblems programs and ways to strengthen relationships with the religious community 26 GRADUATE FROM PHILMONT RELIGIOUS EMBLEMS COURSE
Twenty-six participants graduated from the Religious Emblems Course at Philmont Training Center this summer. The class included District Executives, Chartered Organization Representatives, Executive Board member, Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, Council Chaplain, Learning for Life Director, Council Personnel, Training Chairman, District Commissioners, Unit Commissioners, Round Table Chairman, and members of Religious Relationships Committees. The class also represented a wide diversity of religions. Participants learned about ways to promote religious emblems and how to use religious emblems as a membership tool to increase BSA membership in faith communities. They were then challenged to create their own plans to implement in their specific councils. Click here to read individual Action Plans . Each participant was presented with a framed set of Duty to God patches at graduation. Course Director Mark Hazlewood was especially pleased with this year’s class. “We had very high caliber individuals who not only made the class fun and exciting, they are also the ones who will go back home and make a difference in their local councils.” NEW TARGET COUNCILS WANTED FOR 2008 P.R.A.Y. is starting the process to select 10 Target councils for 2008. Target councils receive 2 scholarships to the Religious Emblems Course at Philmont. They also receive follow-up onsite training for staff and volunteers. P.R.A.Y. is looking for councils that are eager to work with faith communities and build membership through religious emblems. If interested, scout executives should contact Mark Hazlewood at markp@praypub.org for an application. SPIRIT OF THE FIRE A special campfire was held at Philmont in honor of the 100th Anniversary of World Scouting. Some participants brought ashes from previous campfires to add to the new flames. These ashes have been carried from campfire to campfire since 1933. Click here to read the places and dates of all the campfires. Please note that a master list has not been created yet. Until then, there are three separate lists for the 2007 Philmont campfire. GO FISH!
The FISH is the latest piece of the Duty to God puzzle patch. It became available August 1, 2007 and will be featured through July 2008. The puzzle patch is an interfaith program designed to promote the religious emblems of all faiths. Youth and Adults may earn this patch by learning about religious emblems and making a commitment. The puzzle patches are temporary patches worn on the uniform to encourage Scouts to enroll in the religious emblems program of their faith. Plan now to make a presentation to your unit. Encourage your Scouts to get a jump on the program in time for Scout Sunday/Sabbath in February. Sample scripts and slide presentations are available online to make it easy on you. Click here for a brochure/order form . Be sure to browse our presentation resources online. Please note that the anchor patch (the segment with the kneeling Scout) is always available for first-time participants. Participants will then jump in the rotation to build the rest of their puzzle. P.R.A.Y. TO PARTICIPATE IN CUBCAST CEO Mark Hazlewood will be interviewed as part of BSA’s
monthly Cubcast. The program will include a short segment on the religious
emblems programs. His interview will focus on the why’s and how’s of religious
emblems. It will be aired in December. NEW RELIGIOUS EMBLEMS CHART
BSA has produced a new
Duty to God Quick
Reference Chart, stock number 05-879E. It will be easy to spot
the latest brochure: it is printed in new colors, red and grey. Although there
were very few changes to the medals on the front cover, there were several
updates to the contact information on the inside chart. Every council received a
supply of brochures to distribute one per unit. Be sure to look for this
important resource to come from your local council. UPDATES FROM PRAY
